Meet the Band

  • Gail Carey (Keyboard, Vocals)

Gail spent her childhood dreaming of sharing the stage with Keith Jarret. While that never happened, she did happily marry her piano. Though classically trained, she found her way to jazz in full circle fashion. A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, Gail toured with Interlochen’s Jazz Orchestra. In her college years, she studied classical works through Longy School of Music. She later studied jazz with Neil Olmstead, Jonathan Fagan and Yoko Miwa.

Gail has played in a variety of performance ensembles over the years with styles encompassing jazz, classical, music theatre, gospel/ sacred music and pop. She has a long history of church work where she directed a contemporary vocal ensemble and led a house band, composed for her own choirs and created interfaith / multi-generational collaborations in song. More recently in life, Gail has rediscovered her passion for live jazz performance, and it’s become her new “healthy obsession”

  • David Wright (Saxophone, Flute, Composer/Arranger)

David Wright began playing piano, baritone horn, guitar, and violin in grade school, adding drums in middle school, and landing on saxophone (plus flute and clarinet) in high school and being drawn to jazz. Along the way he began to study music theory and to compose for high school and community big bands and for his jazz quintet. He entered college as a music composition major, but was detoured by its language requirement into an academic career in ancient Near Eastern languages, literature, and history. Yet he found ways to maintain his musical persona, such as doing research on ancient Near Eastern music, teaching a course on the subject, and playing in—and even composing for—the jazz band at Brandeis University (where he taught) when a sax player was needed. He also joined a small jazz ensemble based in Concord, Massachusetts, whose personnel and associations evolved over two and a half decades as a nucleus for Subject2Change.

  • Paul Davis (Drums, Composer/Arranger)

Paul is a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, engineer and producer. He is in high demand in the Metro West area as a performing drummer. Paul is comfortable playing in varied genres including rock, jazz, funk, fusion, and Latin music, and he brings this broad perspective to the music, playing with great sensitivity and style. His current playing activities include frequent performances with several local small jazz ensembles as well as two area big bands. Over his 45 plus years of experience, Paul has performed in symphonic orchestras, theater pit orchestras, Dixieland parade ensembles, jazz and pop ensembles in large theaters and concert halls, small clubs, and at the Boston Esplanade. Paul is also very involved in independent music production, as well as in recording drum/percussion tracks for hire at his home studio for musicians’ projects, both in the U.S. and internationally.

  • Dave Wetherell (Trumpet, Flugelhorn)

Dave Wetherell is a talented trumpeter and flugelhorn soloist from Germantown, NY. He began playing at age 10 under the guidance of trumpeter and band director Henry Cianfoni. By 16, he made his recording debut as a featured jazz flugelhorn soloist at Bard College in Red Hook, NY. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Dave earned a degree in Music Production & Engineering while studying jazz trumpet with instructors Jeff Stout, Mike Metheny, Ken Cervenka, and Greg Hopkins. He played 2nd trumpet in the Roy Nutile big band, and briefly served as a recording engineer and horn arranger for Turning Point Records. A new member of the jazz sextet Subject2Change, his musical influences include Chet Baker, Freddie Hubbard, Chuck Mangione, Doc Severinsen, and Clark Terry. An avid vintage cornet collector and Olds enthusiast, Dave enjoys playing different horns in his performances.

  • Eric-Jan (EJ) Schmidt (Bass)

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Eric-Jan (EJ) Schmidt started playing bass at 14 and studied with Frans Bouwmeester, an accomplished upright bass player and member of the Karel Boehlee trio. Over time, EJ enjoyed playing with various musicians studying at conservatories in The Hague and Amsterdam and other bands, before moving to the US. Residing in Concord, MA, EJ plays fretted, fretless or semi acoustic 5 string basses, and is comfortable playing a wide variety of music with an emphasis on Jazz and Funk. Over the last three years, EJ’s primary band has been Subject2Change, and he also frequently plays with other Concord area musicians.

EJ’s second passion in life is photography. He particularly enjoys capturing live musicians on-stage doing what they do best. He is credited with all Subject2Change’s photos on this site.

  • Paul Benzaquin (Guitar, Vocals)

Paul Benzaquin is a musician and music educator in Concord Ma. After beginning to play jazz guitar in middle school, his musical journey has had many iterations. While in high school he performed in rock bands and bluegrass groups. He then studied classical guitar with Michael Newman in New York city and sang in a semi professional chorus. An interest in choral music led him to the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York where he studied choral music and received a degree in music education. While preparing to conduct, he studied piano with Donald Berman and voice with Carol Mastrodomenico. Having taught music at Shady Hill and San Francisco Friends School, he currently teaches elementary music and leads jazz and marimba ensembles at Nashoba Brooks School. Jazz guitar studies with Steve Kirby have helped him to develop his jazz guitar skills. He considers himself lucky to be playing with the excellent musicians in Subject2Change.
